NEWBORN COLLECTION

Celebrate the journey with us

Congratulations!

We are so happy you are here! We know that pregnancy is exciting but can be exhausting at the same time and we are just glad that having photographs taken of your newest bundle of joy is part of your priorities.

At Bows and Ribbons Photography we specialize in newborn photography and capturing all your little one’s precious details when they are as tiny and sleepy as possible. Our sessions are typically scheduled within the first 2 weeks because babies tend to sleep more during this window. At this age, newborns can be positioned safely and more easily when swaddled in blankets, wrapped in our organic fabrics, or posed in our handmade bonnets, headbands and tiebacks. But while posed newborns look lovely, we also try to achieve natural lifestyle poses with mom and dad (as well, as older siblings, if they’re present).

If first 2 weeks isn't possible, we still try to accommodate newborn sessions up to 4 weeks.

Newborn Sessions

The optimal age to photograph a newborn is from 7 to 9 days, which is usually the best time to achieve sleepy posed photographs you see on our pages, but some babies still remain cooperative when they are 10 to 12 days new, as they may have already established a more reliable feeding pattern.

A typical newborn session lasts 3 hours. Some babies may take a bit longer to settle—but they’re adorable, so we always forgive them!

This session is conducted during the weekdays.

This is a great time for mommies and daddies to sit back, relax, and take a breather. Just ensure that your baby (or babies) has a ready supply of milk, diapers, and cuddles for when your little one(s) needs them.

Talent & Time

All our sessions will be captured by two photographers. We will provide all the props, outfits including wraps, those adorable bonnets and tiebacks as well as blankets and layers for the newborn baby and photographic equipment needed for your shoot. This also includes digital artistic enhancements and retouching for all images in post.

BEHIND THE SCENES

Your Session

Our sessions are conducted at our boutique lifestyle studio, which is clean, cozy and equipped with everything babies and new parents need (you will still need to bring your own diaper and milk, though!) All our photographs are captured using natural window light. We typically conduct the session between 10:30am to 1:30pm.

We prefer all newborn session to be done at our studio, for baby's comfort and safety. Sessions done at our studio provide us with access to our entire collection of handmade outfits, props, backdrops, and photographic equipment. However, should you still want the session to be done at home, please ensure your place is adequately lit by natural light with 3/4 to full-length windows. We also require a minimum space clearance of 2.4m by 2.4m (8ft x 8ft) next to your window for us to conduct the session.

Please note that there will be an additional fee of S$250 for newborn sessions done at home. (This option is currently not being offered until further notice.)

Styling your session

We offer a wide selection of wardrobe choices for our mummies though you are welcome to bring your own outfit, too!

Clothing choice is of the utmost importance at our photography sessions. When you are choosing a color scheme please bear in mind that these photographs will probably be hanging on your walls at home, so choose a colour palette that complements your decor.

If your spouse and older children are joining you in the photographs, it’s always a good idea for everyone to be colour coordinated.

We will have a 15-minute consult over the phone to plan our session and to run through the questionniare you will receive once your booking has been confirmed.

FAQ

What should I consider when choosing a newborn photographer?

There are a couple of things you should look for in a newborn photographer:

The first would be that they are sufficiently experienced in working with newborn babies and has attended some relevant training in the field. Safety should be paramount in your choice of a newborn photographer to ensure that they do not attempt poses or positions that may endanger your little one. Bear in mind that poses that babies can’t achieve naturally and done using professional image compositing techniques, so you should always ask your photographer about this should you have any doubts.

The second thing would be to choose a newborn photographer who has a style that is in line with the look and feel you are looking to achieve from your newborn session. Look for consistency in their work, so you can rest assured that your photographs will look the same as those you see in their portfolios.

It’s also important that you get to know your photographer. After all, you will have to trust them with your precious bundle for the duration of your 3-4 hour session. Try to meet with them or speak with them over the phone before your session. The most successful newborn sessions tend to require good rapport and teamwork between parents and photographers.

When is the best time to do a newborn photo shoot?

For our style of photography, the optimum time to photograph a newborn baby is between 6 to 9 days after birth when they are sleepier and less active. This ensures babies can be safely placed in the various newborn-specific poses. But if this is not possible, you should aim to have your session done within the first 14 days at least. Many babies are still sleepy enough to achieve most newborn poses before they turn 2-weeks old.

How early should I book my newborn photography session?

Most of our mummies book their session with us after their 20-week scan. But you can book a newborn session at any time before your baby is born. Do note that booking your session earlier would increase your chances of securing a session within baby’s 5-14 day window.
Once you have booked your session, we will reserve a window before and after mummy's EDD (Estimated Date of Delivery) in anticipation of the baby's arrival. We only accommodate one session a day, as we'd like to ensure a relaxing experience for our mummies and daddies.

How do I book a session with Bows and Ribbons Photography?

Once you are ready to book a session with us (Yay!), we will require some details from you to prepare our contract for your endorsement as well as an invoice for your first payment. At the same time, you will receive a preparation guide that provides you with information on what you can expect before, during and after the session. You will also receive a questionnaire to help us get to know you a little as well as your expectations for the session.
We will require a 50% deposit to block your date(s) in our calendar while the remaining 50% is due on or before our actual session date. Please note that your session has not been confirmed until after our contract has been signed and we have received your deposit.

What happens if I deliver early?

We take on a limited number of sessions each month in order to accomodate mummies who deliver before or after their EDD. Once your session has been confirmed, we will reserve a window before and after mummy's EDD in anticipation of the baby's arrival. However, if your little one ends up being too excited to meet you, we will reschedule your session to an earlier date.

Since baby’s safety is always our priority, we have to insist that parents ensure their baby is healthy enough his or her first photography session. While this could mean that we won’t be able to photograph your little one within the first 14 days, don’t worry, we will do our best to customise our session based on baby’s age, temperament and health condition.

What if my baby needs to stay longer in the hospital for some treatment?

Your baby’s health is of the utmost importance. There’s no need to feel pressured about your newborn session just because your little one needs a little extra attention after birth.
The most common reason babies remain in the hospital after birth is jaundice. But there are other reasons as well. If the baby needs to stay in the hospital for a little longer than expected, your session may be rescheduled or postponed to a later date.
Once the baby has been discharged and given a clean bill of health by the paediatrician, we can carry out the session as planned.

My baby’s skin is peeling and he/she has stork bites. Will you edit those out?

At Bows and Ribbons Photography, our objective is for mummies and daddies to remember their little ones exactly as they looked to them: absolutely perfect. With that in mind, we digitally post-process and edit images to ensure all temporary skin blemishes are removed, while your baby’s perfect little details are retained.

How long would the session take?

Our typical newborn session lasts between 3 to 4 hours. This includes time taken to feed, change and cuddle your baby. Babies are all unique and some require more attention than others, so do keep in mind that your session duration will be dependent on this factor.

Do you do sessions at the client’s home?

Yes, we do conduct sessions at home instead of our studio. But there are certain requirements that your home will need to meet before we can agree to this.
Newborn sessions: We require that your home be well-lit enough with ¾ or full length windows with a space of at least 2.4m x 2.4m for us to work with. There’s also an additional fee of S$250 for a newborn sessions done at home.
Maternity sessions: We require ¾ or full length windows, adequate light and day curtains. We usually conduct home maternity sessions in master bedrooms, so we require adequate natural light and space in your bedroom for our maternity sessions. There’s a fee of S$80 for maternity sessions done at home.
Milestone sessions: We prefer to carry out milestone sessions of 3-9 month olds at our studio since our natural wood backgrounds cannot be transported. However, if you are considering a lifestyle milestone session for your baby at home, ask us about it if you’re interested. Our requirements here are the same as for maternity sessions.

Do I need to prepare anything for my newborn session?

We don’t require parents to do anything special to prepare for our newborn sessions. Just prepare your baby as you would if he or she was going out for a few hours. This includes giving the baby a bath before leaving, and packing enough diapers, wet wipes and a change of clothes/onesies in case the baby soils them. Milk would really be the most important thing to prepare, so make sure you have enough bottles if you express or use formula. If you breastfeed your baby, then you don’t need to worry about this, of course!

What happens if my baby falls sick before our scheduled session?

If your little one does come down with something just before their session, please don’t hesitate to let us know as soon as you can. Although we would typically charge a fee for last minute postponements, if you let us know at least a day or two before your session that your baby may be ill, we should be able to postpone your session without any added cost.

How do you ensure your studio is clean and sanitized?

As photographers who work with young babies, we have to ensure our studio is always clean, and our props are always sanitized. We do this by thoroughly vacuuming and mopping the floor of our studio with a disinfected after every session. To ensure our floors stay clean, we insist that no shoes or unfolded strollers are ever allowed in our studio.
Additionally, we ensure babies are always wrapped in comfortable organic cotton jersey wraps before they are placed in any of our props--this comfortable inner layer protects baby’s skin and is always washed after each and every session. As babies don’t make direct contact with our props, which are mostly made of fragile or aged wood, we do not wash our props. We do regularly dust them though, and occasionally wipe them down with a damp cloth where possible.

When will I receive the preview gallery after the session?

You will typically receive your Preview Gallery, which will allow you to choose your favourite images, a minimum of 2-weeks (14 working days) after your session has been completed.

Can we have all photographs returned to us, even those that are not edited?

We don’t sell RAW files or return all photos taken to our clients. This is due to the fact that we select only the best photographs from every session and perform basic creative enhancements to all images before you see it in your preview gallery. All images from your preview gallery, are however available for purchase, and we have discounted packages if you would like to purchase a greater number of images than your chosen package includes.
Additionally, we do not sell the copyright of our images as that would mean that we had no more control over the distribution and possibly unlawful sharing of images.

How long will it take until I receive my final images and/or prints?

We typically take 4 weeks to fully process and hand-edit a full gallery of selected images for our clients. All our mummies and daddies will receive a Preview Gallery 2 weeks after their session where they can begin to select their favourites. The sooner you get back to us with your favourites, the faster you will receive your final images.
Parents who need some images in a hurry can choose our Keepsake and Luxe collections. These collections both include at least 3 fully-edited images within 10 days of their session date which they can use to announce their baby’s birth while waiting for the rest of their images to be delivered.

I don’t need the {memory box} and prints, can I convert those to more digital images?

No, unfortunately we do not allow the conversion of value added elements such as our Memory Box or prints into additional images. If you prefer more images, you may choose to purchase more individually, or in the form of discounted bundles which we also offer.

I have no use for the Birth Announcement eCards, can I convert those to more digital images?

Birth announcement eCards come with 3 full-resolution and digitally enhanced images which we select ourselves—these include a photograph of your baby’s face, as well as one closeup shot of their little fingers and another of their toes. These images and Birth Announcement eCards are meant to help mummies and daddies officially introduce their little ones to the world.

And while we do occasionally allow parents to forgo their birth announcement for the ability to choose 3 more images from their Preview Gallery (for the total of 25 instead of 22 images), we would not recommend this since they would then have to wait for 4 weeks for the delivery of all their images.

I like your photography style, however, I would prefer you use fewer props. What would you recommend?

First of all, the type of posed newborn photography we do involves the posing of babies in a variety of props with some posed shots on beanbags done with babies who are sleepier during their session. If you would like to use more minimal props or setups, please do indicate some specific setups you’ve seen from us by sharing some images from our past sessions. We can then attempt to recreate them.

If you would prefer us to attempt more beanbag poses with your baby, we would like to let you know that these setups are usually more difficult for less sleepy babies to pull off. As such, while we can focus on doing more of these types of shots which focus on baby, we will still include some props in all our sessions.

Another session that you may consider if you prefer less use of props, is our lifestyle session.
